Energy storage technologies

Overview

How can cities advance decarbonization through energy storage systems? In this project, I had the opportunity to understand what energy storage systems mean and understand the advantages and disadvantages of the different storage systems.

Project Abstract

As cities across the globe, including New York City, move towards Decarbonization, it is crucial to consider the role of energy storage technologies in achieving this goal. Energy storage technologies help balance the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources and provide reliable electricity during peak demand periods. Potential storage infrastructure includes batteries and non-battery technologies. Batteries, however, are a challenging option; for cities as big and dense as NYC, massive amounts of lithium and cobalt will be required and would be very expensive. Non-battery technologies include pumped hydro, compressed air storage and molten salts. Adopting these storage systems could help build resiliency and support the transition to renewable energy systems.
